What's New at Adina
RECOGNITION FOR ADINA WINES
Trophy Win for the Adina 2008 Estate Semillon
At the recent Hunter Boutique Wine Show we were thrilled when our 2008 semillon won the top gold and trophy in Class 5 (current vintage Semillon). In a field of 27 Hunter Semillons submitted for judging it was assessed as the stand-out wine. Given the tricky harvest conditions of 2008, this was an excellent result. All in all the vineyard team under Glen Ryan and winemaker Matt Burton did a super job. While this wine has been bottled and labelled, we expect to release it for public sale in about 18 months.
Other Recent Show Results
At the same show Adina wines won 8 medals in other classes in addition to the 2008 semillon class. Prize winners included some of our icon wines (Clare Terese Chardonnay, Thomas Charles Shiraz and The Cabernets) as well as the cellar door favourites Pinot Grigio and our Chardonnay/Pinot Noir sparkling.
Also at the recent 2008 Hunter Valley Wine Show two of our premium wines were awarded gold medals. The 2005 Thomas Charles Reserve Shiraz won a gold in Class 25 (2006 and older Shiraz) and our 2007 Clare Terese Chardonnay won a gold in Class 12 (2007 Chardonnay). We were very happy that these carefully nurtured wines received this recognition, and congratulate the winemakers - Matt Burton and Daniel Binet.
The 2009 Grape Harvest Outlook
While it is still early days, the vines are developing beautifully. There is still a lot of underground moisture from all the rain over the past year, and growth has been vigorous. We have our fingers crossed for what we hope will be a great vintage for 2009. The combination of good rainfall and the warming temperature has ensured that the vineyard and estate are looking very green and lush.
Olive Grove News
Just as with grapes, we had a difficult 2008 season with the olives. Because of rain and other issues, the olive oil yield was down significantly, and some table fruit was left on the trees because quality was not up to our standards. We took advantage of that to do a "spring clean" of the grove that included a serious pruning of the trees, much fertigation, increased nutrient spraying, mulching, improved irrigation and so on.
As we come into summer the result is starting to show. The trees are looking very healthy, and we have hope for a good season in 2009 and an even better one in 2010.
